Gaslamp Quarter Insider 2011

Previous Issues of the Gaslamp Insider>

Mardi Gras in the Gaslamp on Fat Tuesday, February 21, 2012 was epic! The streets will were alive with the hottest DJs, four stages, six elaborate areas, outlandish performances, masquerade parade and more! 35,000 revelers partied in the streets and enjoyed all of this Mardi Gras merriment!

Mardi Gras in the Gaslamp activated each block into unique, elaborately themed areas so that around every corner there were new, stimulating experiences. Folks wandered down “E” Street into the Voodoo Grounds, surrounded by voodoo dancers and music coming from every direction as Mardi Gras’ favorite dance crew created an interactive Mardi Gras Flash Mob dance experience.

The Gaslamp Quarter paid homage to its roots as it changed back into the days of Madame Cora with an enticing Red Light District along “F” Street. The streets were alive with splashes of red color and guests were intrigued to enter with its impressive DJ line-up and alluring entertainment. An array of vintage windows were placed throughout the block to recreate the illusion of the famous “Red Light District” windows, and from time to time they opened, revealing a peek of San Diego’s hottest dancers within. If that wasn’t enough to lure guests in, projections of sexy silhouettes and intimate burlesque dance performances will made this the ultimate area for lust and desire.

Outrageous and interactive entertainers reminiscent of good ol’ New Orleans will took over “G” Street to activate the Cirque Noir area. Colors and music consumed all on this block with acts comprised of different types of genres and entertainment groups.  The large percussion of Samba Dancers and drummers was intense and folks became mystified as they looked up into the sky to catch the aerial acrobats flying through the air.  It was all unexpected sights and sounds in this area.

Club Rio at the intersection at Market Street and 5th Avenue lit up the night sky with its aerial lighting projections and dynamic staging. This area rivaled the energy and momentum of Ibiza Rocks Festival with its animated, colorful laser show and the biggest house, techno and electronica DJ superstars in the nightlife industry!

The Sideshow area on Island Avenue greeted folks with outrageous stilt walkers roaming the streets that morphed into crazy circus characters and animals that interacted with the crowd. These bizarre animal stilt walkers did exclusive mini shows, performing tricks throughout the evening on the raised Go-Go girl platforms. In between those performances, folks quenched their thirst at one of the bars as they were captivated by the beats that these phenomenal DJs threw down. As they danced their heart out, they became aware of the lively circus freaks such as the Bearded Lady, World’s Strongest Man and street performances that mystified and amazed all.

With all of these exciting and tantalizing blocks of entertainment, it was a treat to travel all the way down Fifth Avenue to “K” Street to the popular Electric City area with some of the biggest names in progressive techno DJs performing. The DJ stage put revelers into a trance with its display of LED screens projecting vibrant images pulsating to the beat of the music.

Fifth Avenue was transformed into an urban Bourbon Street with one outrageous masquerade parade.  We had the biggest floats, most outrageous entertainment, celebrity guests and unbelievable surprises. Spectators flooded the streets & collected as many beads as they could from dozens of lively parade entries and energetic costumed revelers traveling down the parade route!Photo Credit - Enne Bi Communications

For the first time in the history of Mardi Gras in the Gaslamp, the COASTER  operated train service after midnight to offer revelers a safe ride home. Party-goers took advantage of two-for-one train ticket prices throughout Fat Tuesday. The North County Transit District offered free parking at all of its transit centers (except Santa Fe Depot), which offered a stellar driving alternative for people coming from North County and beyond. Mardi Gras festivities are only a few blocks from the COASTER’s last stop at Santa Fe Depot.

The complete line-up was completely amazing!! Check this Master list We've complied for you >

December 2011 -
It's officially the holiday season in Southern California. It may not look like it, as we have sunshine and no snow but the spirit is here even if it is wearing shorts and Ugg boots.  Navigating the Christmas season in San Diego is tough as there is just too much cool stuff to do.  Gaslamp can be your one stop shop to help you manage it all.

Start with Happy Hour! Reach out to a few of your favorite folks and set up a time to have a drink in one of our cozy lounges. We have every flavor imaginable with a huge variety of ethnic, regional and downright creative dining destinations. The best gift you can give is your presence - so make the time and toast to the future together!

We also suggest you let Gaslamp do the cooking and entertaining this year. Not sure about who is open when? Your Gaslamp Insider is collecting that info for you. Check the Gaslamp Christmas Holiday Guide for details on hours, specials and Celebration menus.  We have great restaurants open on Christmas, elegant locations serving up Holiday Tea and fun places ready to watch the big games.

Get down here a little early for your party or event and you can zip through our small independent boutiques and shops to find some fabulous & unique gifts before you meet up. We just don't have the crush of traffic and parking issues that other shopping locations are currently dealing with.  We're literally your quickest and easiest shopping option this time of year. We have incredible selections for those looking for something not available in every mall in America. You'll become the preferred gift giver in your circle of friends when folks see their one-of-a-kind items. Those of you waiting until the last minute can slip into a places like Nikki & Co who will stay open until 10 pm Christmas Eve to buy a spectacular & shiny bauble to make up for the fact that you nearly forgot.

Your foodie friends might invite you to join them if you share some gift certificates to our world class dining destinations as holiday gifts. Look for gift cards at classic locations like Donovan's Steak & Chop House, The Oceanaire Seafood Room or get a gift card that is valid at each of the locations in the Cohn Restaurant family of delicious dining if you can't decide what they would like. Nobu invites you to think outside of the Bento box with their gift cards and recipe books.

If (or when) it all gets too much for you sneak into one of our Gaslamp Spas for a massage, reflexology or aromatherapy. Consider trying some personal services like acupuncture for your health and extra energy or perhaps some Juvederm, eyelash extensions and a spray tan before New Year's Eve . . .

Oh I said it . . .New Year's Eve. Gaslamp is home to more than 150 electrifying dance clubs, swanky lounges, fun bars and rowdy taverns. This makes us the undeniable King of New Year’s Eve!!  You simply cannot find a greater gluttony of choices than our group of fun loving venues.  Review our NYE Guide . . it's true!

Whatever you do, wherever you go, we hope the joy of the holiday season stays with you, follows you and keeps you warm.

The Best of the Holidays to you from the Gaslamp Insider and our entire network of Gaslamp greatness!

Better deals!
Funky Garcia is the Zorro of Happy Hour - slashing at prices day & night.  He already hosts all day deals on Mondays & Wednesdays as well as every afternoon from 3 pm to 7 pm but now taco fiends can enjoy the new LATE NIGHT HAPPY HOUR too! It's Fri, Sat & Sun from 9 pm to 11pm.  Do you like great deals on cold Cervesas like Dos XX and Negra Modelo and firey shots like Patron and Don Julio? You’ll be down for getting FUNKY then – won’tcha?!

If for some odd reason, Tacos are not your speed consider Taste & Thirst's meaty alternative! Rodney’s offering up a T-Bone steak on Tuesday nights for only $10 and he’s got a truckload of good deals nearly every other day too.  How does Monday Madness, Wing Wednesday or $2 Thursdays sound? Fresher Meals!
Every Thursday, beginning at 6 pm you can enjoy Market Fresh Diners from The Fleetwood. They have their Chef out there, picking up the local farm fresh goods and bringing them back to whip up crisp creations. Newer Places!

When you’re craving flavorful nibbles, The Insider loves sending you to new places.  Berkeley Pizza is fresh too. They make their deep-dish pizzas so deep, rich and immense you might want to nap inside one.  This specialty pie is worth waiting for, so call ahead (619-937-0808) or swing by and they’ll let you grab a slice hot from the oven.

More decadent choices!
I’ve been haunted by the sign in the window at The Broken Yolk promoting their Chicken & Waffles plate. Every day I walk by thinking, “Wow – I’ve only heard people joking about that on TV. Do I really want it?” Answer? YES! I finally broke down this morning and ordered up some.  Hard not to love Waffles & who doesn’t like fried chicken. Somehow together the sum is greater than the parts and it is indeed magical. The chicken had this toasty crunchy coating that soaked up some of the syrup for a sweet salty bite. Fabulous!  Try it! The gym will still be there tomorrow.

Needed more insanely good treats? How about Sevilla’s Crema Cantalana - it was once explained to me as a Chocolate and Espresso Crème Brulee. It has the same type of caramelized top, it's just that the rich and creamy inside is darker, more complex and much more indulgent. Just the way I like it.

Even Tastier Cocktails!!
Our California Governor just signed a bill that ends the state's ban on infused alcoholic beverages.  Until recently, the practice of infusing alcohol with fruits, vegetables, herbs or spices for use in cocktails was a big no-no as they can increase the potency of the cocktail in a manner that isn't monitored and rated like distilled spirits.  Mixologists will now be able to add a flavor or two to a liquor like vodka and leave it to soak or marinate and create a new flavor.  The flavors can be anything from fruit to spices to tree bark. The results are usually pretty delicious. Ask about infusions at our most clever venues like Osteria Panevino or Osetra & they'll have'm. [Osetra even features Infused Martini Cocktails at their daily Happy Hour 4:30 - 7 pm Sun thru Friday! ] Cheers!

Burger-Lounge-NEW-in-Gaslamp
September 2011   The Gaslamp Insider recently met with our fun San Diego Professional Tour Guide Association to see what is hot for Labor Day weekend.  They were excited to talk about recent trends here in the Gaslamp Quarter and what to look for heading into fall.  Never being short on opinions about Gaslampian businesses, The Insider will share these thoughts with you too!

Trend 1, The Re-Invention! Just like any other pack of wildly popular Celebrities, the stars of the Gaslamp refresh themselves frequently. Recent facelifts and personality renewals abound! Italian diva, Bella Luna transformed into The Hopping Pig Gastro Pub, bringing decadent pork bellies and chocolate bacon martinis along with a herd of craft beers. Hotspot Stingaree is recreating their “Guest House” with a revised floor plan on the street level with a comfy seating area wrapping around their eclectic bar.  Parties at the Sting will never be the same now that Campine Catering is in the House! The Super Group of Chefs features Brian Malarkey from Top Chef Season 3, Antonio Friscia, Gaslamp’s Chef of the Year in 2010 and Catering guru Andrew Spurgin. They’ll take care of the events at home and they’ll take their inventive and innovative show on the road. Donovan’s changeover from Circle of Fifths to Donovan’s Prime Seafood looks good.  The mega-hit steakhouse purveyors hit the mark perfectly when changing over the 5th Ave venue. They kept the gorgeous patio intact, created more space to lounge & cocktail and crafted a fantastic group dining space focusing on our truly San Diegan love of fruits from the Sea. Bravo Donovan’s!

Trend 2, Fresh Meat - San Diego's own Burger Lounge has brought their popular grass-fed and organic yummies to 5th Avenue and nearby Nathan’s Smokehouse is dishing up savory tri-tip and other authentic deli items.  Both of these new additions complement our family of Great Gaslamp Steakhouses. We have places serving up the best in Certified Angus Beef, Kobe Beef, and even tender Elk. Carnivores are welcome to plan their conventions here. They will not be disappointed.

Trend 3, The Luxury Lunch – Larger conventions have been enticing Nobu to open for lunch now & again, The Gaslamp Insider gets the notices when the Sushi giant serves it up in the daytime, so stay connected to me, my foodies. It’s certainly a special treat for locals who lunch in Gaslamp.  Palm Restaurant is also offering up their delectables in daylight every Friday afternoon. Look for Finally Friday Menu while you convince the boss he owes you one. Searsucker is doing lunch with a simple walk-up counter service. Perfect for those on expense accounts looking for separate checks and those short on time but more importantly, amazing cuisine without a reservation. You can enjoy the topnotch dishes from Celebrity Chef Brian Malarkey when their marquis location is a little less jammed with adoring fans.

Gaslamp-Insider-Dolcetti-BoutiqueTrend 4, Urban Safari Shopping! Gaslamp’s very unique shopping opportunities are in season. Rather than hitting a mega mall that has the same items as every other mall in America, chic downtowners are game for finding novel items tucked inside our gorgeous architecture. New additions to the treasure trove of fashions include Goorin Brothers Fine Hats, adorable designs at Dolcetti Boutique, elegant accessories and apparel at Eden Boutique and precious gems at Nikki & Co. We boast a great collection of shops, spas and indulgent personal services for your enjoyment. Learn more about our SHOP GASLAMP program.

Trend 5 – Hot Pockets! Despite the fact that Gaslamp's reputation is enormous, the neighborhood is not. We’re only 16 and one half blocks on our official roster. Occasionally we’ll notice that one little nook or corner has gone white hot with excitement. This month we credit Sevilla for igniting the east side of 5th between J and K streets. Café Sevilla was born on 4th Ave and after many, many years of enticing people to sip Sangria, nosh on Tapas and Salsa dance all night, they grew into a new facility on 5th Ave custom made for their Moorish experience. Fully re-opened and back to dishing up Empanadas and Paella, the new space is gorgeous and comfortable. I can’t wait to bring in a group for happy hour under the twinkle lights in the Tapas bar or upstairs for a decadent dinner in the private mezzanine space that looks like a master den.  The underground nightclub is already stirring up the heat with their Flamenco shows, Spanish Rock and of course, Salsa Nights.  Sevilla cuddles up to Donovan’s Prime Seafood on one side and The Wine Bank on the other. Things have become more enticing on both sides with the renovation at Donovan’s and a resurgence of activity nearby at The Wine Bank.  Their team has been adding a lot of new tastings recently.  In addition to tempting folks at their Saturday samplings, they’re doing cool a weekly series of tastings on Friday nights with guest Vintners.
Even Gaslamp's long-time resident and Sevilla neighbor Michael J Wolf has been glowing lately. Michael J Wolf's Fine Art Gallery was one of the most exciting hubs of activity during our Comic-con this year.  It was a special treat for fans of late night talk Show host Conan O'Brien. The Comic is launching a new cartoon identity "The Flaming C" and Fan Art from around the world was put on display within Wolf's gallery space. Thosands of fans came thru to see the hilarious spectacle. If you missed it, you simply have to take a minute to learn more about The Flaming C and review the zany Artwork. Openings, renovations, wine tastings and the Flaming C? Now that is one hot block!

What Trend is next?  . . . We’re waiting to hear about it from you! Visit us on Facebook and tell us what you love about our amazing neighborhood!

Summer time is great for slipping out of the office for some sunshine at lunch or spending a vacation enjoying a long afternoon feast.  The Gaslamp Insider encourages you to discover an Gaslamp-insider-Broken-yolkoutstanding breakfast or lunch at one of our great escapes.  The Broken Yolk Café is a good place to start! This comfort food restaurant prides themselves on over 20 different omelets as well as featuring your breakfast and lunch favorites.  If you are really hungry, try finishing the Broken Yolk Iron Man and Iron Women Special, as seen on Man vs. Food.

If you want entertainment with your food, get a slap in the face at Dick’s Last Resort. All waiters, enticingly goofy and rude, provide an environment full of laughs and delicious food. Menu items such as wings, ribs, shrimp and chicken tenders will keep you coming back for more. Their big loud patio is a great place to waste time and Live bands can be seen on weekends.

If you are craving something sweet, stop by Pinkberry in the Gaslamp Quarter and fill-up a cup of self-serve frozen yogurt. Choose from a large variety of toppings, but it is hard to pick just one, so go ahead and try as many as you would like all in one cup. Right now, enjoy even more. Check thier blog to win a gift card!

The Old Spaghetti Factory, located in the Gaslamp, has been serving delicious meals for years. Food for any age, such as pasta, comes in generous portions and is always an excellent choice. Each meal comes with 3 courses which will please anyone who should try a taste.  In the mood for one entire pound of a delicious burrito? Fred’s Mexican Café serves up tasty and healthy Mexican food that will feed even the ones with the biggest appetite. Stop by on Taco Tuesday’s for $2 tacos and drink specials!

Gaslamp Insider - Comic-con Invades GASLAMP           Some may be saddened by the end of another amazing Comic-Con but we here in the Gaslamp like to say. . .WHAT’S NEXT!?!  So Bring on Football Season! Bring on The Fifth Avenue Auto Showcase! Bring on the San Diego Film Festival! Bring on Halloween in the Gaslamp! and most importantly; Bring on The annual Lamplighter Awards, Dinner & Auction! It’s time to get busy in San Diego’s National Historic District. We have a host of great autumn events on the horizon but . .  until then we’ll have to satisfy ourselves with long leisurely lunches on Gaslamp’s sunny patios and fully charged happy hours in our wide assortment of bars & taverns.  We’ll force ourselves to hit the local shops for art shows & great deals or visit the spas for summer pedicures & late afternoon massages. It will be tough but we’ll settle for getting on VIP guests lists at our world class nightclubs and hitting up the Champagne Brunches the next morning.  It’s tough being a GASLAMPER, but someone has to do it.

(Previous Posts) Comic-Con invades Gaslamp

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Your Gaslamp Insider is a HUGE fan of the Comic-con and the week of amazing sights and incredible energy it brings to the neighborhood.  Bring on the costumed characters! Bring on the celebrity sightings! Bring on the craziness! WE LOVE IT! Those who have the coveted badge may have invested some time researching the best way to tackle the Convention floor but everyone can use a primer for tackling the Gaslamp Quarter between Wednesday & Sunday, July 20-24, 2011

PARKING > Get a jump on the tide coming into downtown and print up our super detailed PARKING MAP! We have illustrated many great locations in the north end of the Gaslamp for you and our map will help you navigate the locations and the access points. Look for the arrows that indicate which side of the street and turning point to enter the many parking resources. We’ll get you headed the right way. Can't read small print? (Yes there are so many parking resources we needed to use small print - Believe it!) Try my detail map of North End Parking only.

DINING > People watching will be at its peak, so you should also plan to snag a spot on one of our great outdoor patios at some point.  Throughout this website we have tons of information for everyone! We have a great DINING GUIDE to help you choose from our cornucopia of flavorful options and plenty of easy links from our master directory on dining featuring Cuisine by Type75 Lunch Locations and even Quick-serve stops. The Nerd HQ is rallying the nerd army so they can share in all the gaming, technology, and popular entertainment we all love > More Info

Helpful tips? ~ Obviously, Heavy downtown traffic is expected, so if you must drive, tune into radio station AM 1660 on event days for traffic & parking updates.  If anyone owes you a favor, get them to drop you off! Use either F Street (westbound) or G Street (eastbound) for drop-offs and pick-ups, they have much less traffic than Harbor Drive and the best escape routes back to the freeways.

Plan a place to meet somewhere in the Gaslamp Quarter to collect members of your party in case you’re separated on the Convention floor (a very real possibility). You don't want to wait for them in some hallway or on the side of the road with all your cool new stuff. (and don't count on your cell phone as the carriers could get overloaded) Wait for them where nice people are fetching you hot food and cool beverages. We have 150+ comfy places to kick back and wait.

If you've been interested or waiting for the perfect time to try VIP Bottle Service in one of our swanky nightclubs - this is it. You never know who will show up in the private and exclusive booth beside yours. Celebrity sightings are huge this time of year and you’ll want to be up close to all of the action!  We hope you get the chance to enjoy Comic-con as much as we do. Don’t be afraid to swing by! The Gaslamp Insider will be out & about – I’ll be the one with the camera!

(Previous Posts) This very special neighborhood is an entertainment destination that grows and changes constantly.  This summer the changes are promising to be super fun and that's what we all live for down here! First up? A new HIP HOP HEAVEN just
F6IX - Gaslamp's HIP HOP HEAVENopened up. The brilliant minds behind FLUXX and Side Bar bring you F6IX!. A great new destination for those of you seeking Hip-Hop. F6IX is on the corner of 6th & F Street and the Insider thinks it will be thumping all summer and those who need to dance will be loving it.

The Insider loves that we have new things to watch for in our ever changing neighborhood.  I'm predicting Mexican style seafood fans will all be drooling once the team over at Funky Garcia’s opens their new location next door Mariscos el Pulpo. Fresh Seafood & Spicy Salsas? Sound like a win-win! The last Saturday of the month now has a new brunch location, Airr Supper Club will be hosting a Champagne Brunch with live entertainment. They say it will be “Bottled to Perfection”; we say it will probably be delish too.  The Hopping Pig lives up to its name! It hopped itself on over a couple of spaces to 748 5th Ave., so they could have more room for you fans of Gastro Pubs.  The Gaslamp Insider is still anxious to get over there and try the Bacon flavored Vodka but just can’t decide between a Bacon Chocolate type martini and the spicy Bloody Mary with a spike of beautiful bacon-ness! Which would you get?

Gaslamp-Insider-Karaoke-Krazy     Brave souls looking to rock out can now find Karaoke at Wet Willies every Tuesday and Thursday Night. Nothing takes the sting out of the work week like belting out a few Rock Anthems and Love Ballads! If you are on vacation, this is an even better excuse, as no one you work with will see your rendition of that Whitney Houston song you still secretly love.  If doing Karaoke will make you beat yourself up in the morning you should learn a few Ultimate Fighting moves.  The Insider keeps a list of places that show the UFC Fights on The Sports Page. The next one is Saturday July 2nd, UFC® 132: Cruz vs. Faber.  Study that match and you’ll be ready!  Watch out! We have a new Jeweler in town. Nikki & Co., just moved into the corner of 5th & Market with a sweet collection of Antique Jewelry and Fine Watches.  Yet another great Gaslamp place to get the prefect gift for someone. Also new in town is Inga Bezio. While her new salon might be hidden back on 4th Ave near the de-light-ful Urban Lighting, You can't miss Inga with her megawatt smile and purple streaks in her hair. The Insider suggests the eyelash extensions for a fun & flirty new way to be the eye-opening downtown Diva that you truly are.

If the Taste of Gaslamp was like speed dating – I’m going to predict there will be a LOT of second dates coming up. The whole "Taste" weekend of June 18th & 19th was simply fabulous and delicious! Guests will be back for more and soon!  We all want to thank our great Chefs & participating Restaurants, all of our fabulous volunteers and all of our hungry samplers! We absolutely love this event and are so grateful to you all for sharing your time with us! It was a real treat - Cheers to you all!

No one eats like My Dad! - I learned most of my passion for food across the table from him at various types of restaurants by watching him execute the perfect order so many gaslamp-fathers-day-times. He always knows what to get at each location! That is truly one of life’s great skills. If your Dad has that kind of voracious appetite and loves to try new things the Taste of Gaslamp really is a great way to share the day with him.  Eat, walk, discuss & repeat - then stop for a beer! Perhaps it is a not just a coincidence that the events lands on June 19th  . . . .

You can try to be as cool as my Dad or maybe just find a nice place where you can trust the Chef to make the choices for you. At one of our best Italian restaurants, Acqua al 2, they offer a series of pasta dishes called Assaggio di Primi.   It’s their signature dish and it requires a two person minimum as they serve the Chef’s choices family style, course by course. This is a great way to enjoy a meal as a group as you get plenty of pasta and plenty to talk about as you try each dish together!  Don’t forget to "Share Nice" like Dad taught you.

The Insider would normally suggest skipping the Cheesy gifts but not when that means a Fondue kinda cheesiness! Treat your Father and yourself to a hearty three-course fondue meal and special drink pairing for $35 at The Melting Pot on 5th & E St.  Choose your poison for the pairings with each course from four stout categories: Bourbon, Scotch, Craft beers or fine wine. Pretty sure that beats a boring tie!

The best Father’s Day DAYTIME Dining specials I have seen so far have been from some of our local favorites! Croce’s has a fun special for Dad’s that attend their weekly Jazz Brunch-a FREE BEER!*    Pops could choose to select a dessert (Chef's choice) or a glass of Champagne instead of a brew, with one of the sensational menu items like Smoked Salmon and Scallion Scramble.  Breakfast and Lunch are available from 10am - 2:30pm, and live music with Daniel Jackson begins at 11:00am!  [*with purchase of breakfast, lunch or dinner entrée].  Fleming's Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar on the corner of 4th & K Street will open at 11:30 am to welcome you and your Dad. Tell him to order up something delish from the three course Brunch menu like the Mushroom, Cheddar and Filet Mignon Frittata and he gets a Free $25 Dining Card* for a future visit.  The deal runs from 11:30 am to 3 pm  and the 3-course Brunch is $32.95 per guest.  They also offer their regular menu which is full of tasty treats. [*$25 Dining Card valid 6/20/11 – 7/17/11] Maybe if you're good he'll bring you when he comes back to redeem that gift card!

Gaslamp-Fathers-Day-cuban-cigarsOther Father’s Day ideas have been popping up in my inbox like popcorn! You might want to grab some of that popcorn for the classic films they show on the big screen at Gaslamp Reading Theater and check out the Forty Foot Film Series with the old man!  They feature classic old school favorites for only $5 at Noon on Sundays and at 7 pm on Tuesdays. Gift ideas? Gaslamp has you covered there too! We have more than 80 great shops [
SHOPPING MAP] in our little historic neighborhood and something for everyone!  The Cuban Cigar Factory may look like a just a tiny shop from the outside but it’s really a cool place to hang. Anytime I drop in they’ve got a few of the guys sitting around, enjoying a smoke and a coffee, pondering the world.  The fellas will help you navigate the smoky world of Cigar shopping and you’re sure to leave with something your cigar aficionado pappy will appreciate. While shopping be sure to snap a photo with Chief!  That’d make a cool Facebook profile photo.

If your pops doesn’t puff try Goorin Brother’s Bold Hatmakers instead. This spanking new shop in the gorgeous Yuma building has the tweed cap he needs for the summer.  Their special Holiday deal right now is “Buy Dad a dapper Fedora and get a Kids Hat FREE!”  You could also buy something designed to take care of the guy that took such good care of you. . San Diego’s UV index is miles high so proper sunglasses are a must. Unless Dad wears glasses with 100% UV protection he could be at a higher risk for damage than wearing no glasses at all!  Swing by Eyes on Fifth and talk to Phil and the boys. They can help you choose from the myriad of styles and selections available to find something to flatter your Father’s face and help him keep an eye on you.  Yes, you can pick up a pair of Von Zipper’s for yourself while you are there. . .The Insider won’t tell on you like your brother does!

Previous posts: 6/6/11 - Working in the Gaslamp Quarter is exciting regardless of occupation. We all get to enjoy the seasonal changes like swarms of colorful baseball fans and crazy Comic-Con attendees on our sidewalks. We all get to actively participate in the amazing nightlife because barely a week goes by without a great charity event, a fun anniversary party or a sexy Grand Opening, that frankly, we are required Taste-of-Gaslampto go to. . .as part of the job.  We’re all encouraged to take advantage of the chic shopping and great deals, as the cute boutique windows beckon us as we walk past each day.  BUT . . . the single greatest challenge of all these fabulous workplace complexities is the dining. The dining opportunities are just dazzling. The sheer variety itself is amazing, as Gaslamp boasts nearly 150 destinations with edibles in our 16 and a half blocks, 75 of which also offer lunch.  Peel a layer deeper and the question of what to have at each delectable destination can spin your top. That is why we here at the Gaslamp Quarter Association take the Taste of Gaslamp so seriously.

The Taste of Gaslamp event is an educational urban safari.  You don’t just taste the food, you experience the ambiance as well, at each participating location’s home address.  You meet their staff on their turf and their Chef has all the amenities of their fully stocked kitchen to impress you.  If you do this event properly, you should leave downtown quite full, quite happy and quite certain of some places you are coming back to.  If the Taste were speed dating, the end result would be some sensational second dates. We honestly believe that once you’ve been to a new place and tried something interesting and tasty, you’ll be much more confident about returning and investing some of your hard-earned dollars on a full dining experience.  We also think you might have that habit of getting the same thing every time at some of your favorite places, so you’ll be encouraged to try something different.  We invite you to come and embark on the event with that in mind! Tickets include your food sample at each location and a stop at the fabulous Sam Adams Beer garden on the rooftop at Altitude Sky Lounge. There are nearly 35 locations each day, so that’s a spectacular value. The walking tour is self-guided so it’s easy-going for those who will want to take their time and savor the samples or wide open for those who move at a brisker pace to get to as many locations as they can literally fit.  Sunday the 19th is Father’s Day and we know it’s a great way to share some time with Dad.  Hurry up and get your tickets before it sells out and The Gaslamp Insider will see you there . . .  I’ll be the one in the stretchy elastic waist pants!

gaslamp-fathers-day-brunch Time to turn up the volume whilst we BRAG a bit. The Gaslamp Quarter completely kicked everyone’s butt at the Annual California Restaurant Association’s Gold Medallion Awards Dinner! We took home nearly a dozen of their precious Gold plates! That’s almost a third of the total award count. Congrats to Brian Malarkey for staking claim on the Best New Restaurant prize.  While we here in Gaslamp already know how obviously amazing Searsucker is, the rest of the world is still catching on. [Yes, you need to make a reservation in advance but try sneaking in for their dastardly Sunday Brunch or decadent workday lunch if you didn’t get that gene the helps you to plan stuff ahead of time!]

More glorious claims to fame include our Donovan’s Dan Shea taking the rare President’s Award – for contributions well beyond the dinner plate and a host of other delicious accolades for our restaurants: Best Asian Cuisine> Taka Restaurant, Best Pizza> Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza, Best Family | Casual Style Chain> Melting Pot Gaslamp, Best Italian Fine Dining> BICE Ristorante [Have your tried their amazing Cheese Bar yet? Alexander Salazar Fine Arts The Gaslamp Quarter recognized Alexander Salazar Fine Arts Gallery with a prestigious award this week. He was honored as the GQA's BID Business of the Year. The gallery celebrated its very first anniversary in March of 2011 but has accomplished so much in that time span that the team behind it, is deserving of the highest accolades.  Alex Salazar began by renting a small display gallery space and within months he began taking over adjacent properties to offer space for aspiring artists to develop, added an auction house and another display space. He regularly utilizes his venues to assist local charities with fundraisers and showcase all levels of artistic talents, including students and non-traditional artisans. The growth of his business in its’ first year is simply unparalleled. His gallery took a dark corner of 7th & Broadway and created its’ own micro-district for the Arts in the midst of downtown San Diego.  Salazar is extremely generous with his money, time and energy. He’s been an avid supporter of the GQA, for many years prior to his gallery opening.  He has attended and supported fundraising events and is a welcome participant in community events.  Locations that others have ignored have blossomed into fresh and energized spaces for many to enjoy. In this one brief year, this man has touched so many lives, helped many charities & artists and made a colorful incredible impression on the community he embraced. We feel that his astounding accomplishments in such a short time frame make Alexander Salazar Fine Arts a perfect GQA member to be recognized as the BID Business of the Year 2011. The San Diego Chamber of Commerce honored each of the BID Business of the Year nominees from the varied communities that make up San Diego’s BID Council at their Small Business Awards Luncheon & Business Exchange on June 9th.

Gaslamp-quarter-insider-Cinco-de-Mayo

Previous posts:  5/5/11 - It has nothing to do with Mayonnaise! For nearly 50 years, the French army had remained undefeated until they clashed with the Mexican army on May 5, 1862 in Puebla. The outnumbered and poorly supplied Mexican army with just sticks, stones and machetes defeated the well-armed French forces in what became known as the "Batalla de Puebla." Of course they lost the war but who cares about history? This is about enjoying Cinco de Mayo! Caliente Cuisine, Salted Margaritas and Frosty Cold Beers will be everywhere you look in Gaslamp today.  I'm waiting to hear the sounds of the blender whirling and the music seeping up thru the floor right now! The Gaslamp Insider really is here in the soul of the Gaslamp and today, conveniently located upstairs from La Fiesta! They've got 7 Coronas in an Ice Bucket for only $15, $5 Margaritas & Patron Shots plus the Live Mariachi's at 5pm.  I'll be listening to all the fun my Amigos! gaslamp-quarter-insider-easter-brunchPrevious Posts: 4/19/11 - Easter Brunch is calling and it's time to scramble it up! Check these places for something new & yummy.

The Melting Pot Restaurant - Opening at Noon on 4/24 and offering a set 4-course menu. I'm leaning toward the Champagne Swiss Cheese Fondue but you might prefer the Garlic and Herb Cheese Fondue!  Searsucker Launches their new Brunch on Easter Sunday! Look for divine treats like The Bacon & Egg Bloody Mary or Strawberry Sangria and pair them with something like 'Bourbon Brown Butter Toast' with blackberry, maple, whipped cream cheese or perhaps Malarkey's 'Green Eggs and Ham' featuring a Rustled egg, pork belly, brioche, herbs. [O.M.G!]  The Oceanaire Seafood Room will also open at noon for Easter Brunch, they'll be featuring their Chef's favorite seafood inspired brunch items. I'm down for Pacific Dover Sole stuffed with Brie, Bay Shrimp and Blue Crab. We all like Dublin Square Irish Pub for a comfy breakfast. For the Holiday they offer up a complimentary Mimosa or Bloody Mary with purchase of any Breakfast or Lunch Item (Offer Ends At 2pm). How About The Newry Egg Sandwich? It's made with Irish bacon piled on grilled eggs, topped with Cheddar cheese and served on an English Muffin. Long time Gaslamp favorite, Croce's has live Jazz Brunch with Daniel Jackson every weekend but for Easter, You can enjoy a free glass of champagne or dessert*  with purchase of any breakfast, lunch or dinner entree*.  Which one? I'd try the Polenta del Pueblo-Grilled corn meal with chorizo and eggs, fresh tomatoes, scallions, yellow corn, melted jack, green chiles and blackened tomato sauce. . but that's just me - I'm spicy. (*Chef's choice)

3/18/11 - This week the Gaslamp Insider is very excited about a recently discovered and extremely impressive Gaslamp ArtisticGaslamp-insider-cantor-gehlhausen-beauty's-promise partnership! Gaslamp clothing designer Gordana Gehlhausen of Goga Boutique & TV's Project Runway and Gaslamp artist Tim Cantor combined their talent in the ART MEETS FASHION exhibit at the San Diego airport. Tim's painting "Beauty's Privilege" inspired the Goga dress. Both artisans are on the same block of 4th Avenue between Market Street and Island Avenue. Did she see this painting on the way home one evening? or was it at one of the exhibitions at Tim Cantor's Gallery? One has to wonder how the idea came about. The good news is there might be more to come and it won't slip past the Insider next time.

Something in the Airr? Yes. We're anticipating a new Supper Club promising a provocative social dining experience, infused with sensual and exotic flavors in seductively themed lounges. Sounds delightful eh? The grand opening celebration is slated for gaslamp-insider-airr-supper-club.gifMay but watch for sneak previews and advance events at AIRR Supper Club. Sounds like they are all about creating the right Atmosphere!

Need another reason to BE HAPPY? A new Happy Hour at the Hard Rock Cafe! Recently launched alongside a cool Local's promotion featuring 20% off for our downtowners, their Happy Hour(s) will be kind to your wallet in the afternoon AND the late night on weekends. Big thanks to our hard rockin' friends for their decadent discounted offerings.

Dolcetti translates to  "Sweet Little things"  and in this store could mean the adorable owners, Minet and Natalie, who are business partners, sisters and best friends or the Vintage cupcake dresses or the floating double-jeweled rings or the  . . . Well, you get the idea. A Style Concierge works as your personal style concierge and a hair salon - one visit to downtown's new style and fashion headquarters at 635 5th Ave and you'll be looking sweet too!

3/1/11- Fresh Gossip, Rumors & more for March! This month it is everything the Insider Mardi Gras Paradecan do to keep up with Mardi Gras in the Gaslamp. While the festival itself is still weeks away on March 8th, 2011 - here are beads to stockpile, costumes to try on and a big parade to throw.  Plus, there are so many great deals and options, how can I choose? Plus, don't forget the most anticipated parade of the year, The Masquerade Parade starting at 9:30pm.  WOW, so much to consider for the most anticipated event of the year, good thing I have a few more weeks to decide what I want to do. If you're like me and have questions check out the Frequently Asked Questions link of the Mardi Gras Homepage. If you are here in the Gaslamp on Fat Tuesday, you'll see me - I'll be the one with the beads on!! Laissez les bons temps rouler!

gaslamp-insider-lincoln-roomGaslamp is always brimming with a wide assortment of cool things to check out even on a non-event day. To begin, we're in on the trends! We have a Gastro Pub for you to try. . .   The Hopping Pig! In the space that was Aqua Blu, the same creative owner takes on a new challenge. This is the stuff that makes downtown so fun, so Hop on it!  now perhaps you're thinking its Confidential but honest Abe is being honored in the recently renovated space at the corner of 4th & E Street called The Lincoln Room. Penny for your thoughts on the Lincoln Log look and the glowing lanterns brought in by the same fun team that brought you La Puerta.  Ironically Revolver is loading the gun just a couple blocks away with “Food to Die for” inside the Voyeur Lounge. Chef Kari Rich is using local, sustainable and organic ingredients whenever possible to create an upscale but casual space with delicious and inventive tapas style dining. Edgy and urban, it's sure to be one of the coolest new downtown hotspots.

Pasha Lounge on Market Street is now open. It's an upscale hookah lounge under delicate Moroccan lights. This beautiful, happy and sexy lounge was designed by Davis Krumis (Stingaree, Bar West, Universal & Kress) with his intent being to delight the senses.  Cafe 21 is another cool new opening to investigate. The owners of the Adams Ave eatery are taking a crack at enticing downtown diners with their casual but delectable fare. Husband & Wife owner operator team, Alex and Leyla are both from Azerbaijan, which I challenge any reader to point out on a map.  Suffice to say, they come from another world entirely and their creative menu reflects that.

The Insider now wonders if the next big thing might be tucked behind the familiar Cesar's Cigar & Coffee Lounge at 503 5th Ave at the corner of Island Ave. They are right smack dab in the middle of transforming the place out back into a taco lovers hideout called  The Broken Border Bar & Grill  - looks like they are cooking up somegaslamp-insider-searsucker-chantelle-photography smoking new fun!  At 6th & J Street look for the new Rendezvous! A Cafe Bar & Bistro open for breakfast and lunch. Smells like Croissants and Coffee are on the menu.  We also have a couple of proprietors in downtown that are just hitting their stride after being open for just a few months.  Looks like 2011 is the year they strut their stuff.  Top Chef Malarkey is now serving fabulous lunch at Searsucker Restaurant. Don't let the casual and quick service fool you. We have some Serious Cuisine going on here, now available in daylight hours.  Shoppers will want to visit our most recent retail additions Eden, a women's boutique opening at 520 5th Ave on Wednesday Feb 9th and The Bettie Page store located at 430 5th Avenue.  Bettie has been open for just a couple months here in our National Historic District. You'll find their garb to be super stylish and timeless. . .just like us!   Around the corner from them on J Street, you'll find more fun & unique women's shops. . . The Lingerie Lounge and Lady Asher Boutique. Gaslamp's no boring old shopping mall with the same brand name shops on every corner. We feature lots of independent operators. We strongly encourage you to Shop Local - Shop Gaslamp! We even host a monthly shopping night that features special sales, demonstrations and tours - Check out Gaslamp's own Local's Night.

We have more places that may not have been here last time you visited. How about "WET WILLIE"? - Don't fret. . .Nobody is sticking a wet finger in your ear! It's a slushy drink place on the corner of 6th & Market! They promise delicious foo-foo concoctions with a kick! So if you'd like to support some global cooling - go check them out! And. . . If the stock market is your game, you might like the challenge set out at The Tipsy Crow, their Drink Exchange involves the same principles with tastier outcomes. The Gaslamp Insider's final dining tease is on new (extremely local) owners taking over the space that was Sin Nightclub, and a springtime re-open of Cafe Sevilla in their new 5th Ave location! Stay tuned.

The Gaslamp is host to a ton of sporting excitement.  We have both basketball & hockey season kicking, and of course the baseball season countdown has begun!  As a big sports fan I can tell you finding the right spot to watch sports is an art Gaslamp Insider SO DIEGO Brothel Tourform.  Scope the Gaslamp Sports Page for the perfect place and thank me later for having such a great resource available for you. Yes UFC, Rugby and Soccer fans - we have info on there for you too.

If you're looking for activities a bit tougher than elbow bending you might like a local tour. We have a couple of fun Historic tours as well as both shopping and Segway Tours. Check our tours page for info on the Gaslamp Quarter Historical Foundation's tour, where the docents will teach you about our neighborhood's past life during a beautiful walk throughout the district or try the new Brothels, Booze & Bites tour from So Diego, if you'd like to do so sampling as you go. Both provide a glimpse into our fascinating but checkered past.
